Here’s a little true story. I have this friend named Disha, who uses these gorgeous deep matte colors on her eyes and dazzles in them. Now me and Disha have pretty similar skin-tones, so I decided to buy the exact same shade and try the same look. I was so confident it would suit me that I didn’t even bother asking her to let me try her eyeshadow! But guess what… this experience turned out to be a major bummer 👎👎 cuz the color just never popped on my eyes the way they did on Disha’s. But silver-lining — the experience made me want to write this blog — to share what I learnt about the importance of knowing your eye’s shape, to get that perfect eye-makeup look. While colors & product efficiency make a world of difference, the shape of our eyes is a basic fact we tend to ignore while using makeup.
Alright, here’s the spread — internationally, beauticians have classified eye-shapes in 4 broad categories as listed below. Bring up your phone to eye-level, look straight at your camera and take a selfie with a straight face & open eyes. Read on to do a quick inspection of your eyes to find your shape.
- Almond
- Round
- Monolid
- Hooded
- Understand the Tilt, Depth & Gap of your Eyes
Mind you, your eyes might as well be a combination of these types & it is also possible that both your eyes are of different types! Don’t worry this is not abnormal as long as it does not obstruct or hinder your vision. Just try a combination of the looks that suit the particular eye-type until you hit your sweet spot. 👌 Also, your eye shape may undergo changes as you age. Again, this is nothing unusual, all you need to do is be aware of your beautiful transformations. 😇😇
Experimentation & Practice are the only two sure-shot ways to perfect the best look for your eyes — because like everything human, your eyes are unique & beautiful! All you need to do is accentuate them.
I’ve tried to illustrate each eye type with a few examples here. Hope they help. Okay then, let’s cut to the chase!
Almond Eyes
🤳Selfie Eye-shape Analysis: You have almond shaped eyes if
- You have a crease on your eyelid
- You can’t see the white of your eyes below your iris (the black/ brown or colored part)
Round Eyes
🤳Selfie Eye-shape Analysis: You have round shaped eyes if
- You have a crease on your eyelid
- You can see the white of your eyes below your iris (the black/ brown or colored part)
Monolid Eyes
🤳Selfie Eye-shape Analysis: You have monolid eyes if
- You have no crease on your eyelid. (known as the epicanthic fold)
Hooded Eyes
🤳Selfie Eye-shape Analysis: You have hooded eyes if
- You have a crease on your eyelid.
- But it’s nearly invisible when your eyes are open because skin above your crease overlaps it.
Understand the Tilt, Depth & Gap of your Eyes
Tilt : Upturned vs Downturned
🤳Selfie Eye-tilt Analysis: Draw a straight through the center of your eyes. Be as precise as possible. (shown in image above)
If your eye’s outer corners are above or at the line you’ve drawn, they’re upturned (like Deepika’s eyes shown above)
If your eye’s outer corners are below the line you’ve drawn, they’re downturned (like Katrina Kaif)
Depth : Protruding vs Deep set
🤳Selfie Eye-depth Analysis:
As the name suggests, if your eyes appear to be deeply set in the eye socket, thereby making the brow bone more prominent. You have deep set eyes.
On the contrary, if your eyes seem to be the highlight of your face because of their prominent presence with your browbone appearing to be milder, you have protruding eyes.
Gap : Close set vs Wide set
🤳Selfie Eye-gap Analysis: Draw a straight from outer end to inner end on each of your eyes. And draw a line to join these lines in a different color. (shown in image above: Pink for eye size, black for the gap)
If your eye’s size is larger or equal to the gap between the eyes (like Deepika’s eyes shown above) you have close set eyes. i.e., Black line smaller than Pink
If your eye’s size is smaller than the gap between the eyes (like Anushka Sharma) you have wide set eyes. i.e., Black line larger than Pink.
I’m saying it again, it is totally normal that both your eyes are of different sizes or types! Different eye structures create their own unique advantages and obstacles in eye makeup. Just try a combination of the looks that suit you best and practice till you perfect it. Don’t just embrace yourself, celebrate you ❣❣❣
